Where I'm from: I grew up in Lake Oswego, Oregon. After spending several years in New Zealand and England I now spend most of my time in Seattle with my husband.
Favorite equestrian discipline: All of them! I'm focused on show jumping now, but I'll always have a soft spot for 3-day-eventing.
First attempt at writing about horses: When I was in 6th grade I wrote a fairly terrible racehorse story. My mom still has it.
Favorite moment with horses: The day I got my first horse when I was thirteen. His name was Billy and he was an off the track Thoroughbred and I'm pretty sure I was the only person that liked him (some people around the barn had another name for him: 'Billy the Butthead').
Favorite horse books: SEABISCUIT, EIGHTY-DOLLAR CHAMPION, THE BLACK STALLION, and I grew up on the THE SADDLE CLUB series (when I wasn't reading NANCY DREW).
Favorite things to do: Riding and writing (of course!), traveling with my husband, reading good mysteries/thrillers, spending time with friends and eating good food!
First horse I rode: Besides pony rides, my first ride was on my grandfather's 20 year-old quarter horse Sinbad. Previous pets that roamed around my grandfather’s farm before I was around included lions, tigers, and elephants (I’m not kidding!)
First lesson: I started taking Western lessons at the age of 8. I wore a sweater with two giant horse heads on it and fringe (the horse’s mane) down the sleeves to pretty much every lesson. Yikes!
First horse show: I rode my instructor's horse Pinstripe in a dressage schooling show when I was ten. He was an off the track Thoroughbred, and was one of the reasons I fell in love with riding.
My inspiration for the book: I drew inspiration from my not-so-great middle school years, and my escape, the Hunt Club. All these years later, the Hunt Club remains the most impressive stables I've ever seen, and at the time it was full of an array of eccentric characters. It truly seems like a place that came straight out of a novel.
Favorite foods: All of my friends think that I have a chocolate chip cookie addiction (this may be true). I'm currently obsessed with this cookie dough shop in New York City.
School and work: I graduated from Pepperdine University, before earning my MBA from Oxford University. I worked in finance for several years and now I'm a web designer and online marketing freelancer when I'm not writing books.
